That year, he reached the semi-finals and was a Doubles runner-up (with Caratti) of the French Open Juniors, as well as the quarter-finals at the U.S. Open and Wimbledon Juniors. Together with Zivojinovic he reached the doubles quarter finals at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. He finished that year ranked 3 in the World Junior Rankings. In 1989, he qualified for the Australian Open and ended up reaching the quarter-final and reached his first Grand Prix Singles Final in Florence just before enjoying his fourth round performance at the French Open. 1990 was a very successful year for Goran; he reached 5 singles finals, won his first title at Stuttgart, reached the semi- final at Wimbledon and on top of that he reached 3 doubles finals, including the French Open.

Goran Ivanisevic climbed the ATP world rankings up from number 954 in 1987 to 371 in 1988, to 40 in 1989 and 9 in 1990. Enjoyed his best pro season in 1990 when he reached five singles finals, winning his first title at Stuttgart in July. Also reached three doubles finals, including the French Open.

Goran Ivanisevic aggressive style and his impressive service allowed him to reach ranking 2 in 1992.

Goran Ivanisevic was coached by Balazs Taroczy from September 1989 to the end of 1990, followed by Bob Brett from February 1991 until October 1995 and is currently coached by the Croatian, Vedran Martic, who began with Goran in February 1996.

Goran Ivanisevic is managed by the Ion Tiriac Group in Monte-Carlo; his managers are Ion Tiriac and Gérard Tsobanian.

Goran Ivanisevic grew up in Split, Croatia, on the Adriatic coast, the son of an engineering professor (his father, Srdjan) and a chemical engineer (his mother, Gorana, after whom he was named). Between them they engineered a remarkable athlete, as a boy Goran played football, basketball and ran cross country races, winning the city championship race five times. He has one older sister, Srdjana, who was named after her father.

The tennis courts nearby also lured him, and soon it became apparent that the boy had a future in the game. Srdjan and Gorana got him the best coaching available for a lad in Eastern Europe, and his progress was incredible.

When Goran Ivanisevic is not on the tennis court, Goran also loves playing football and basketball. For further information on Goran’s private life, please go to ‘Hobbies and Passions’.
